The research groups of ETH Professors Torsten Hoefler and Mathieu Luisier are awarded with the Gordon Bell Prize for the method they have developed to simulate nanoelectronics devices and their properties realistically, quickly and efficiently. They were supported in their work by the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) with its supercomputer "Piz Daint", as well as by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US with its supercomputer "Summit".

Usually, the Gordon Bell Prize is awarded to internationally composed research groups. The last Swiss participation was in 2014, with researchers from the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. In 2013, it went to the research cooperation of the research group of ETH Professor Petros Koumoutsakos, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Technical University Munich.
